History[]

When the church was established in Australia with the arrival of two priests in 1812 the entire continent and Tasmania was a part of the Vicariate Apostolic of Mauritius. On 12th May, 1834, the Vicariate Apostolic of New Holland and Van Diemen’s Land was erected and on 28th February, 1842, the Diocese of Sydney was elevated, two weeks later being elevated again to an archdiocese. On the 15 November 1951 the diocese of Wollongong was erected out of the Archdiocese of Sydney.
